Arts & Culture

Cara Ellison is an accomplished designer, novel & video game writer currently based in Los Angeles. Cara has over a decade of experience writing for different projects, which include video games, shows, comics, and novels.

Regarding video games, Cara Ellison’s experience is vast and fascinating. She has worked on significant video game projects, such as Dishonored 2, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, Void Bastards, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2, and many others. Currently, Cara is busy working on two new projects. She is the Narrative Director for Nightscape, a Mezan Studios & Astrolabe production. While that keeps Cara busy, she is also a writer and editor for The Fermi Paradox by Anomaly Games.

Even outside the video game world, Cara Ellison has an extensive writing background. Her first writing position was with Birlinn, where she was a submissions editor in literature. Cara was a producer for BBC Worldwide. This made her responsible for researching, writing, and recording podcasts. Following that, she focused more heavily on her journalism career. Cara Ellison has hundreds of published pieces. Her publications include The Guardian, New Statesman, Kotaku, VICE, Eurogamer, and PC Gamer.

Other publications of Cara Ellison’s include The Final Girls, a comic by ComiXology. Cara has used her insight into the videogame work to help educate others. This became the foundation for Embed With Games: A Year on the Couch with Game Developers. This informative novel has been lauded as amusing, honest, and touching and contains a forward by famous comic author Kieron Gillen. It’s worth noting that Embed With Games won the New York Game 2016 Award for journalism.

In 2014 Cara Ellison signed on as co-writer for Charlie Brooker’s How Videogames Changed The World. This TV show was hosted by Charlie Brooker, an industry hero for Cara. The series looked at different video games, explaining to viewers how much each has changed the world.

Over the years, Cara Ellison’s work has received plenty of attention and awards. In 2019, Last Commanders, one of the projects she worked on, received a BAFTA award for Best Entertainment TV program. Looking further back, Cara was recognized as one of the Guardian’s Top Ten Young People in Digital Media in 2014.

It should be no surprise that Cara Ellison has substantial opinions about video games and the industry. She firmly believes that people commonly underestimate the power that video games can harness, often looking at them more as a toy than a tool for storytelling. She hopes that someday people will understand just how much potential there is within video game writing. With time, Cara hopes that the perception of the industry will change.

When not busy writing for new projects, Cara Ellison isn’t afraid to enjoy her time playing video games or appreciating the art around her. Two of her favorite games include Kentucky Route Zero and Thirty Flights of Loving. They are her favorites as they are perfect examples of just how complex video game writing can be when pushed to the limit.
